چکیده

By reconstructing how an influenza protein collected in 1968 might have evolved into one collected in 2007, researchers have obtained new insights into the interactions between genetic mutations.

Complexity in the immune system

The immune system is a real-time example of an evolving system that navigates the essentially infinite complexity of protein sequence space. How this system responds to disease and vaccination is discussed. Of particular focus is the case when vaccination leads to increased susceptibility to disease, a phenomenon termed original antigenic sin. A physical theory of protein evolution to explain l...

Stability of the Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin Protein Correlates with Evolutionary Dynamics

Protein thermodynamics are an integral determinant of viral fitness and one of the major drivers of protein evolution. Mutations in the influenza A virus (IAV) hemagglutinin (HA) protein can eliminate neutralizing antibody binding to mediate escape from preexisting antiviral immunity. Prior research on the IAV nucleoprotein suggests that protein stability may constrain seasonal IAV evolution; h...

Inferring Stabilizing Mutations from Protein Phylogenies: Application to Influenza Hemagglutinin

One selection pressure shaping sequence evolution is the requirement that a protein fold with sufficient stability to perform its biological functions. We present a conceptual framework that explains how this requirement causes the probability that a particular amino acid mutation is fixed during evolution to depend on its effect on protein stability. We mathematically formalize this framework ...

STABILITY ANALYSIS FROM FOURTH ORDER NONLINEAR EVOLUTION EQUATIONS FOR TWO CAPILLARY GRAVITY WAVE PACKETS IN THE PRESENCE OF WIND OWING OVER WATER.

Asymptotically exact and nonlocal fourth order nonlinear evolution equations are derived for two coupled fourth order nonlinear evolution equations have been derived in deep water for two capillary-gravity wave packets propagating in the same direction in the presence of wind flowing over water. We have used a general method, based on Zakharov integral equation. On the basis of these evolution eq...
